Various types of PC Motherboards
A computer motherboard is a circuit board which controls the overall functioning of the personal computer. All the components of the computer are connected to the motherboard through cables. It is important for the selected motherboard to have compatibility with all of the components for proper functioning. There are several types of PC motherboards. Their classification is however done on the basis of several factors like on the basis of processor and dimensions.
Below the classification has been done on the basis of the processor - In this the classification differs according to the type of socket.
Socket A: They are also known as the socket 464 motherboard. In this type the socket contains 462 pins and come with a PGA that is Pin Grid Array packing. The bus speed is between 100 to 200 MHz’s. They are especially meant for the processors like AMD and Durons.
Socket 370: They have 370 pins and are meant for the Celeron and Intel Pentium III processor. Their bus speed is 66 to 133 MHz’s. They have a PGA package and also provide support to the VIA Cyrix III and VIA C3 processors.
Socket 378: Out of various types of PC motherboards this is specially made for the Pentium IV processors. Similar to previous ones they have a PGA package and 478 pins. They provide support to the processors like Pentium 4EE and Intel Pentium M.
Socket T: They are meant for processors like Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Quad and Inel Xeon. They are also known as LGA 775 as they have 775 pins and bus speed is 1600 MHz with a PGA package. They support Celeron, Pentium D, Celeron D and Pentium XE.
Socket 839: They are only built for AMD processors like Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 62 and Operton. They have 939 pins and bus speed of about 200 to 1000 mega hertz.
Socket AM3: These types of PC motherboards are the newly developed and are for the AMD Phenom III and AMD Athlon II processors. It has 941 pins and a speed of 200 to 3200 mega hertz. They also come with a PGA packaging.
Socket H: They are also known as LGA 1156 as they have 1156 pins and come in Large Grid Array that is LGA. They are also the recently developed motherboards. They are meant for Intel Core i5, Core i3 and Core i7 processors.
In addition to these all of the motherboard types the additional types of PC motherboards are - Socket F and Socket M motherboards. All of them are meant to support particular type of processors.
